Police have launched an investigation following the tragedy that struck Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's district Hangu as two suicide blasts rocked a mosque nestled within the premises of the Doaba police station on Friday.
The gruesome incident unfolded as Muslims across Pakistan celebrated the joyous occasion of the birth anniversary of the revered Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), claiming the lives of at least five people and injuring 12 others.
‘30 to 40 worshippers in mosque’
Meanwhile, a senior police officer stationed in Hangu Fazal Akbar said "One of them blew himself up at the gate, but the other managed to enter the mosque.”
He went on to say “Thankfully, most of the people inside the mosque managed to escape after the first blast, which is why the casualty count is low."
The mosque, situated within the police lines, was hosting approximately 30 to 40 worshippers who had gathered for the congregational Friday prayers when the explosions shattered the sanctity of the moment, he added.
Inquiry launched
Promptly responding to the horrifying events, law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the dual suicide attacks.
Initial findings revealed that two suspected attackers made a sinister attempt to breach the police station's vicinity, only to be met with resolute resistance from vigilant officers.
