The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent flood alert for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, warning of the heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and associated flooding due to rising temperatures, forecast rains, possible wind and storm.
The NDMA's alert to the departments concerned comes as temperatures in these mountainous regions are expected to accelerate snowmelt, significantly increasing the flow of water in rivers. The period from July 17 to 23 is particularly critical, with heavy rains anticipated to increase the flow of water in the rivers further.
"In view of the rising heat and the possibility of winds, storms, and rains, we have issued a GLOF alert," stated an NDMA spokesperson. "The temperatures could lead to rapid snowmelt in the mountainous areas, resulting in a higher risk of glacial lakes bursting and subsequent flooding."
The alert indicates that the increased water flow may cause flooding and landslides in various areas. The NDMA has called on local Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and district administrations to be fully prepared for potential emergencies, including the timely evacuation of affected populations.

"Local PDMAs and district administrations must ensure they are prepared for any necessary evacuations," the spokesperson emphasized. "The safety and well-being of residents in these regions are paramount, and we urge all relevant departments to take the necessary precautions."
Residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are advised to stay informed about weather updates and follow instructions from local authorities. The NDMA, along with other agencies, continues to monitor the situation closely to provide timely assistance and ensure public safety.
The PDMA of Punjab has issued an alert, forecasting heavy monsoon rains across Punjab from today until July 20. According to a spokesperson, most districts in the province will experience heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.

The PDMA spokesperson noted that the monsoon rains are expected to significantly reduce the prevailing heat and humidity across Punjab. However, the heavy downpours may also lead to flooding in rivers and canals, posing a risk to the affected areas.
In particular, south Punjab is anticipated to receive substantial rainfall between July 17 and 19, which could exacerbate the risk of flooding and related issues.
Karachi residents are enduring a blistering heatwave with partly cloudy and extreme humid conditions, as temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius, accompanied by high humidity levels of 53%, according to the Met Department.
The city's sea breeze, typically a source of relief, will remain suspended throughout the day, exacerbating the heat intensity. However, rain is likely in suburban areas.
"Karachiites are feeling the heat at nearly 50 degrees Celsius due to the humid weather conditions," stated the Meteorological Department, cautioning residents to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses. It said the intensity of heat will be felt more due to the humid weather.
