Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar had raised alarms about the potential for dacoit attacks in the katcha area bordering Punjab and Sindh, moments before the recent attack in Rahim Yar Khan's Machka area.
In an exclusive interview to Samaa TV, the IGP highlighted that the operation against dacoit gangs in the region was an ongoing process and that more attacks on police checkposts will take place.
Dr Anwar also called economic and social development the only problems of the bordering region. He also pointed out that the rising water levels in rivers led to increased movement among dacoit gangs, creating heightened security concerns. He warned that criminals in katcha area exploited the challenging terrain and fluctuating river conditions.

"Ten years later also, the police chief will say the same," Dr Usman Anwar remarked.
He further said that the dacoits cannot come to the populated areas due to resistance at checkposts in the region, adding that to address these threats, the Punjab Police have established 70 posts near the riverine areas. These posts are strategically placed to prevent dacoits from infiltrating populated areas and crossing into Punjab from neighbouring regions like Sindh.

The police chief also highlighted the successes of the ongoing operation, particularly against major dacoit gangs such as the Shar Gang and Andhar Gang.
In terms of technological advancements, Dr. Anwar disclosed that thermal imaging cameras have been installed at checkposts and border areas to enhance surveillance capabilities. Additionally, the police force is in the process of procuring surveillance drones and telescope guns to further strengthen their ability to monitor and respond to dacoit activities.
He further revealed that there was a threat of attacks in the katcha area and the Pakistan Army played a pivotal role in supporting the police operation, providing modern weapons and equipment from its own resources. He said more drones and equipment will be purchased.
The IGP later told the media in an interaction in Rahim Yar Khan that an operation was conducted in the area last night, in which the main suspect of Thursday's attack had been killed and four to five others injured.
"The Sindh and Punjab police are working jointly. The Sindh DIG is visiting and we are in touch with the IGP," he said, adding that intelligence-based operations were being conducted.
"We are strengthening the checkpoints in katcha area," Dr Usman Anwar explained.
