Sindh government and Metropolitan Corporation Karachi have initiated a citywide operation to reclaim public spaces.
The decision comes after a meeting between Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, where it was decided to empower Assistant Commissioners to take more decisive actions against encroachments.
As part of this mission, the Sindh Government has prioritized the removal of encroachments around hospitals to ensure access to healthcare facilities remains unhindered. Mayor Murtaza Wahab affirmed the government's commitment, stating, “Strong actions will be taken to eliminate encroachments across the city.”
Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah said that the city would be cleared of encroachments as part of broader urban management reforms. “Encroachment will be eliminated from the city,” said Shah, highlighting the government's resolve to restore Karachi’s infrastructure and public spaces.
In addition to the anti-encroachment drive, the Sindh Chief Minister has approved a fund of Rs. 1.5 billion to repair roads affected by encroachments. Mayor Wahab also announced that the city’s drainage system will undergo significant improvements as part of the broader urban renewal plan.
Further plans include enhancements to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) bus system, with Chief Secretary Shah stating that the government is focused on modernizing the public transport infrastructure. Pension issues of KMC employees will also be addressed as part of the initiative to streamline municipal services.
