The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to participate in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, the body responsible for appointing judges to the superior courts.
The unanimous decision was made during a special meeting of the PTI’s political committee, which approved the proposal to nominate two of its members from both Houses of parliament to the 13-member commission in response to a letter from the National Assembly speaker.
According to the meeting declaration, PTI’s core committee and Founder Imran Khan will provide final approval for the selected nominees before they are officially announced.
During the meeting, the PTI members received a detailed briefing on the speaker's letter regarding nomination of its members. It was also briefed about the expanded responsibilities of the 13-member judicial commission that will appoint judges to the Supreme Court, high courts and Shariat Court.
The commission is now also tasked with overseeing high court judges' performance, preparing performance reports, and recommending suitable candidates for high court positions. The commission also holds the authority to establish benches in the high courts and the Supreme Court, with decisions requiring a simple majority vote among the 13 members.
The briefing highlighted the significance of the role of two opposition members in the commission. The PTI political committee also reaffirmed its stance on the 26th constitutional amendment during the meeting.
The political committee's decision will be submitted to the party's core committee and Founder Imran Khan for approval. The proposed names for the commission will be announced after the formal approval of the party founder.
