Despite the absence of cold weather, the prices of chicken meat and eggs have surged significantly in the metropolis, leaving citizens burdened with rising costs.
Over the past week, chicken meat prices have escalated from Rs530 per kilogram to Rs660 per kilogram, marking a sharp increase of Rs130. Similarly, eggs are being sold at Rs380 per dozen in the retail market, far exceeding the official price of Rs344 per dozen.
In the wholesale market, local eggs are being traded for as much as Rs650 per dozen.
Shopkeepers have attributed the hike to anticipated demand and supply constraints, warning that prices may rise further if the weather turns colder in the coming weeks.
"The increase is largely driven by supply issues and preparations for colder months," said a poultry trader in Karachi's main market.
Meanwhile, buyers expressed frustration over the unchecked price surge, questioning the absence of price control mechanisms. "Where are the price controllers? Every week, the prices of essential items increase without any explanation," complained a resident of Saddar.
