Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar presented the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) Amendment Bill during the National Assembly's question hour, proposing sweeping reforms to modernize the judicial process.
The bill introduces 108 amendments aimed at addressing inefficiencies in case registration, prosecution, and judicial decision-making.
Tarar emphasized the need for reforms, stating, "With the change of time, some things are no longer feasible." He further said complaints had been received regarding procedural hurdles, from filing cases to reaching final decisions.
The law minister highlighted that despite establishing prosecution departments in provinces, their performance has not met expectations. He reiterated that the state is responsible for ensuring effective prosecution.
According to him, the proposed amendments aim to make courts bound to decide cases within six months to a year. He stated, "If the court does not close the case on the discharge report, then a bail must be granted."
The proposed amendments will be reviewed by the standing committee, where lawmakers will deliberate and provide their input before final approval.
