Azmatullah Omarzai's five-for and Ibrahim Zadran’s herculean 177 helped Afghanistan eliminate England by 8 runs in a seesaw thriller in the 8th match at the revamped Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday.
Chasing a target of 326-run target, England were bundled out for 317 inside the 50th over. Joe Root’s brilliant 111-ball 120 went in vain.
Ben Duckett (38), Jos Buttler (38), Jamie Overton (32), Harry Brook (25) showed some resistance with the bat.
Jamie Smith (9), Liam Livingstone (10) and Phil Salt (12), Adil Rashid (5) failed to show any significant resistance with the bat.
Mark Wood (2) failed to show any significant resistance with the bat.
Earlier, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran registered the massive record as he scored the highest individual score in the history of the Champions Trophy during the 8th match against England.
Despite the Afghanistan team faced an early hiccup, losing first three wickets for just 31, but not only Zadran showed his class with the bat, but also accelerated his gears, smoking whirlwind 146-ball 177, studded with 12 boundaries and six towering sixes.
He had scored runs with great resilience and treated the England bowlers with great contempt.
Earlier, on February 22, Ben Duckett scored 143 balls for 165 against Australia, laced with 17 boundaries and three sixes, which was the highest individual score in the Champions Trophy’s history before today, which was broken by Zadran.
