The rising, self-imposed prices of lemons in Multan have severely affected local citizens, with the fruit now selling at Rs250 per kilogram in the market.
According to details, the escalating costs have left consumers frustrated and searching for alternatives.
One local citizen reported, “The price of lemons was Rs80 before Ramadan, but now it has soared to Rs200 or even Rs250 per kilogram. Where is the poor person supposed to go?” Another citizen expressed, “Instead of lemons, we may need to use tamarind or dates for our drinks. How can an ordinary person afford lemons now?”
The official government price for lemons has been set at Rs76 per kilogram, yet in the vegetable market, prices have reached Rs200, and in open markets, they have climbed to Rs250. The situation has led to rampant profiteering by vendors who are selling at inflated rates.
A shopkeeper in the market explained, “We are fully capitalising on the situation. I buy lemons here for Rs160 and sell them for Rs250 or even Rs300.”
Citizens have called on the authorities to take effective action against profiteers and curb the rising inflation.
They have urged the administration to regulate prices and ensure that fair rates are maintained in the market.
