The Seattle Sounders delivered a commanding 5-2 victory over Western Conference rivals Los Angeles FC on Saturday, cementing their dominance in Major League Soccer.
The game, played at Lumen Field, showcased the Sounders' attacking prowess, with the team running away with the match in the second half after a hard-fought first 45 minutes.
Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, drafted out of college by Seattle and promoted from their reserve team Tacoma Defiance, opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a precise finish after cutting in from the right side.
LAFC responded just before half-time, with homegrown forward Nathan Ordaz poking home a close-range effort following a scramble in the penalty area.
However, the Sounders regained the lead early in the second half. Paul Rothrock struck a thunderous drive from outside the box in the 57th minute to put Seattle 2-1 ahead.
Jordan Morris then extended the lead in the 87th minute, scoring his 87th goal for the club and becoming Seattle's all-time top scorer.
Despite an attempt to rally from LAFC, who struggled at the back and lacked attacking spark, the Sounders increased their advantage.
Cristian Roldan added a fourth goal in the 84th minute with a smart finish, and Albert Rusnak completed the rout, tapping in a low cross from Georgi Minoungou.
For Morris, 30, the day was particularly special. A product of the Sounders' youth system, Morris reflected on his remarkable achievement after surpassing Raul Ruidiaz as the club's top scorer.
"It means everything. I've talked about it for a long time, my drive on scoring goals, that's what I want to do, what I can bring to the team," Morris said.
"Being a local guy here, growing up through the academy, being a fan of the team, sitting up in the stands, knowing I wanted to be on this field someday and now to kind of put my name in the record books like that, the history books. It's a huge honor to do it in front of my family and something I will always remember," he added.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Union continued their impressive form under South African coach Bradley Carnell, securing a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution, making it three wins out of three.
Israeli forward Tai Baribo made it six goals in three matches when he put the Union ahead in the 76th minute, meeting a cross from Kai Wagner with a fine header.
Jovan Lukic sealed the win with a long-range blast that struck the inside of the post.
Cincinnati also maintained their perfect start to the season, defeating Toronto 2-0.
Kevin Denkey converted a penalty in the 73rd minute, and Japanese winger Yuya Kubo sealed the victory with a clinical finish. D.C. United extended their unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City, while New York City edged Orlando 2-1 at Yankee Stadium.
In other matches, the 2023 MLS champions, Columbus Crew, were held to a 0-0 draw at home by the Houston Dynamo. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami were set to play Charlotte on Sunday.
