The nation is commemorating Pakistan Day with patriotic fervour today (Sunday), as dignitaries, military leadership, and citizens come together to reflect on the significance of the historic Lahore Resolution of 1940 that paved the way for the country's independence.
The hallmark of the celebrations, the Pakistan Day parade, was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr instead of its usual venue at the Shakarparian Parade Ground. President Asif Ali Zardari presided over the event as the chief guest, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and the heads of the navy and air force also in attendance.
Political leaders, foreign dignitaries, and high-ranking officials graced the occasion.
The day commenced with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals, followed by special prayers in mosques for national unity, stability, and prosperity.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies were held nationwide, while various cultural and educational institutions organized events to highlight the sacrifices made for Pakistan’s independence.
President, PM call for unity and progress
In his address, President Zardari underscored the need for national cohesion and collective effort to steer Pakistan towards economic stability and progress.
“Today, we must rise above all divisions and work together for a prosperous and inclusive Pakistan,” he stated, urging citizens to uphold the spirit that led to the country’s creation in 1947.
The prime minister, in his message, reflected on the resilience and perseverance that have shaped Pakistan’s journey. “From an emerging nation to a nuclear power, our progress has been defined by unwavering determination. However, we must continue to strive for economic growth and social justice,” he said.
Military leadership reaffirms commitment
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in a statement, reiterated the military’s resolve to defend the nation’s sovereignty. “March 23, 1940, was a defining moment in our history, crystallising the vision for an independent homeland. Today, Pakistan stands as a responsible global player, advocating peace and stability,” the statement read.
The CJCSC and service chiefs extended their congratulations to the nation, reaffirming the armed forces’ commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity. “Pakistan remains steadfast in its pursuit of democracy, economic progress, and national security,” they stated.
Historic resolution that led to independence
The Lahore Resolution, passed on March 23, 1940, during the three-day annual session of the All India Muslim League at Minto Park (now Iqbal Park) in Lahore, laid the foundation for the demand for a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent. This historic moment culminated in the creation of Pakistan on August 14, 1947.
To honour this legacy, citizens across Pakistan are marking the day with renewed commitment to national development. Educational institutions, think tanks, and media organisations are holding discussions on the relevance of the Lahore Resolution in today’s geopolitical context.
This year’s parade, held within the precincts of the Presidential Palace, featured contingents from the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force paying tribute to the nation with their ceremonial march-past. The fly-past of the Pakistan Air Force’s fighter jets showcased the country’s aerial prowess, while cultural floats representing the provinces added vibrancy to the event.
Dignitaries, including foreign ambassadors, lauded Pakistan’s progress and resilience, while the presence of diplomatic representatives underscored the country’s standing in the international community.
