Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to adopt the fastest, most efficient, and cost-effective measures to deliver humanitarian relief to the people affected by the earthquake in Myanmar. He emphasized the need for immediate assistance to support those suffering due to the disaster.
Additionally, the prime minister instructed Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry to oversee the departure of the relief assistance flight, ensuring timely and effective aid delivery. This move reflects Pakistan’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and regional solidarity.
Pakistan-Myanmar Relations: A Historical Perspective
Pakistan and Myanmar established diplomatic relations in 1947, soon after Pakistan gained independence. Over the decades, the two countries have maintained formal ties, engaging in trade and diplomatic exchanges. However, their relationship has remained limited due to geopolitical factors and Myanmar’s internal policies.
Pakistan has consistently raised its voice against the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. At international forums, including the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Pakistan has advocated for the protection of Rohingya rights and called for an end to human rights violations. The country has also provided humanitarian aid to displaced Rohingya communities in Bangladesh and other regions.
Despite political differences, Pakistan has extended humanitarian support to Myanmar in times of crisis, including natural disasters. The latest earthquake relief initiative highlights Pakistan’s commitment to regional cooperation and its dedication to supporting vulnerable communities, regardless of political and religious affiliations.
