Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, popularly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic films, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was 87.
According to medical reports, Manoj Kumar succumbed to a cardiogenic shock triggered by an acute myocardial infarction (a severe heart attack). The actor had been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which had significantly deteriorated his health.
Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, confirmed the news in an official statement:
"Veteran actor Shri Manoj Kumarji passed away peacefully at around 3:30 AM due to age-related health issues. He had been hospitalized for the past few weeks."

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema. He gained immense popularity for his roles in patriotic films like "Shaheed," "Upkar," and "Rang De Basanti."
During the 1960s and 70s, he became one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, featuring in classics like:
- Shor
- Do Badan
- Roti Kapda Aur Makaan
- Purab Aur Paschim
Apart from acting, he was a director and producer, helming films like Upkar, Kranti, and Clerk.
Beyond cinema
After retiring from films, Manoj Kumar entered politics and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
His legacy as ‘Bharat Kumar’ remains unmatched, and his films continue to inspire audiences across generations.
