In a welcome development for residents of Hyderabad, solar panel prices have begun to decline significantly following the government’s updated net metering policy, which allows the purchase of electricity from residential solar users.
The shift has encouraged citizens to explore solar energy as a reliable alternative amid growing power outages and rising temperatures.
Retailers in the city report that the cost of each high-quality 585-watt A-grade solar panel has dropped from Rs22,000 to Rs16,500 -- a substantial decrease that is already impacting consumer interest.
“With the new policy and unbearable heat due to climate change, people are now more inclined towards installing solar systems,” said a local shopkeeper. “If a poor man just wants to run a fan and a couple of lights, he comes in with Rs20,000 to Rs22,000 and leaves with a complete setup.”
The reduction in solar prices comes at a time when Hyderabad is facing frequent and unannounced load shedding, especially by HESCO (Hyderabad Electric Supply Company), further pushing citizens to find alternative power solutions.
“Climate change has made summers harsher than ever, and HESCO’s load shedding is making life unbearable,” said a resident. “Solar power gives us a way to stay cool and keep our homes running.”
Industry experts suggest that solar prices may continue to decline, making the technology even more accessible to middle- and lower-income households.
