Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and seasoned politician Taj Haider passed away in Karachi on Tuesday. He was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, his family confirmed.
A veteran of Pakistani politics, Taj Haider was known for his deep-rooted association with the PPP and his unwavering commitment to democratic values and social justice. His political career spanned several decades, during which he played a key role in shaping the party’s ideological direction and was a prominent voice on progressive issues.

Who was Taj Haider?
Haider was born on March 8, 1942, into a scholarly family in Kota, Rajasthan, British India. His father, Professor Karar Hussain, was an English literature teacher at Meerut College at the time.
In 1948, Professor Karar Hussain migrated to Pakistan. Taj Haider received his early education at Government Boys' High School in Ranchor Lines, Karachi. He completed his intermediate studies at Khairpur College in Sindh, followed by a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree from the University of Karachi in 1962. He later earned an M.Sc. in Mathematics from the same university.
Taj Haider attended the 1967 Socialist Convention and subsequently joined the People's Party, becoming one of the founding members of the Pakistan People’s Party during that era. He played a key role in formulating policies related to the nuclear project in 1970. Between 1999 and 2000, he participated in the initial industrial projects of the PPP and was instrumental in establishing the Heavy Mechanical Complex, the Hub Dam, and various other social programs.
A prominent leader within the party, Taj Haider served as the Provincial Secretary-General and was elected to the Senate twice. He first became a senator in July 1995 and was re-elected in 2014 on the seat vacated by Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh. During his tenure, he contributed actively as a member of various standing committees in the Senate.

The prime minister has also expressed profound grief over the death of Senator Taj Haider. In his condolence message, the PM paid tribute to the late leader’s role in strengthening democratic values in the country.
“With the passing of Taj Haider, Pakistan has lost an important political figure,” PM Shehbaz said, praying for the departed soul and offering condolences to the grieving family.

He further stated that Taj Haider’s relentless struggle and sacrifices for democracy serve as a guiding light for the younger generation. “He was a symbol of wisdom and awareness in Pakistani politics,” Bilawal added, noting the profound sadness and shock his passing has caused.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, paying tribute to Taj Haider’s lifetime of service. “May Allah elevate the ranks of the deceased and grant patience to his loved ones,” said the minister.
Former Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani expressed profound sorrow over Senator Taj Haider’s passing. "I am deeply saddened by the news of Taj Haider’s death," he said. "He was a wise politician and a kind human being. His death is a great loss for Parliament, which has lost one of its most vibrant voices and senior leaders."
