Stone, who last played for England against Sri Lanka in September, had been aiming to earn further Test honours with Nottinghamshire this year, but a long-standing injury has now put those hopes on hold.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed in a statement that Stone had undergone surgery following scans which revealed a right knee injury. "Stone experienced increasing discomfort during Nottinghamshire's pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi last month. Further scans conducted this week revealed the need for surgery.
He will now begin a period of rehabilitation, working closely with the medical teams at both the ECB and Nottinghamshire," the statement read.
Stone’s absence means he will miss the start of the domestic season, which begins on Friday, joining fellow England fast bowlers Mark Wood and Brydon Carse on the sidelines.
Stone could return for the final two Tests of the series against India, but he is more likely to make his comeback for London Spirit in The Hundred, which starts on August 5.
