The menace of reckless heavy vehicles continues to plague Karachi, as yet another series of tragic traffic accidents claimed four more lives in the city.
Unchecked dumpers and trailers continue to cause chaos on the roads, leaving citizens enraged and authorities scrambling to respond.
The latest incident occurred near Powerhouse Chowrangi, where a dumper collided with a motorcyclist, leaving him seriously injured. Eyewitnesses reported that an underage driver was racing the dumper, triggering public outrage. In retaliation, angry residents set five dumpers and four water tankers ablaze at locations including Four K Chowrangi and Baba Mor.
Emergency services, including police and fire brigade teams, rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the fires. In response to the incident, dumper drivers launched a protest near Sohrab Goth, blocking roads by dumping garbage and causing major traffic jams. Long queues of vehicles formed, disrupting movement on key routes.
President of the Dumper Association demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for torching the vehicles. Following successful negotiations, the protest was called off and both tracks of the M-9 Motorway were reopened to traffic.
Sindh’s Interior Minister took notice of the incident and ordered swift action against the culprits involved in the violence. Police have since launched a crackdown and arrested several suspects from various parts of the city.
Meanwhile, in separate tragic incidents, a trailer collision in Landhi and Korangi resulted in two more fatalities. On Site Super Highway, a speeding bus ran over a child, and in Shershah, one man was killed after being hit by a vehicle.
With these latest casualties, the death toll from traffic accidents in Karachi this year has reached 257, sparking renewed calls for stricter regulation of heavy vehicles and improved traffic enforcement in the city.
