Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced a significant increase in Balochistan’s share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, saying the government was committed to uplifting the province through development projects aligned with the aspirations of its people.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Jinnah Square Murree Road Underpass project in Islamabad, the prime minister reiterated his government’s commitment to equitable development across all provinces.
“Balochistan is a vital part of Pakistan,” Mr Sharif said, adding that, “The projects being launched there are the voice of the people’s hearts. The once-bloody track that claimed thousands of lives is now being turned into a modern highway.”
The premier did not elaborate on the exact figures or timeline of the enhanced NFC allocation but termed it a “doubling” of the province’s previous share.
‘Pakistan speed’
Highlighting development initiatives in the federal capital, Mr Sharif lauded ongoing infrastructure works, including road expansions and beautification drives, claiming that Islamabad was on its way to becoming “a cradle of progress, beauty and facilities.”
He praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for the pace of work, saying, “This is not Shahbaz speed or Mohsin Naqvi speed—it is Pakistan speed.”
He further noted that the improvement in traffic flow and the city’s visual appeal was evident, particularly in the “spring of flowers” blossoming across the capital.
Fitch rating upgrade
Mr Sharif pointed to a recent economic development as evidence of the government’s performance, citing the global rating agency Fitch’s upgrade of Pakistan’s outlook from ‘CCC’ to ‘B−’, with a stable projection.
“This is the result of collective efforts and teamwork,” the prime minister said. “Allah has bestowed us with some stability in the economy. Now, with the same strength, confidence, and willpower that Team Pakistan has shown in the face of challenges, we will move forward on the path of development and prosperity.”
Infrastructure push in Islamabad
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, while addressing the ceremony, said that the Jinnah Square underpass project would be completed in 35 days instead of the original 60-day timeline.
He added that work had commenced at Faisal Masjid Chowk to address traffic congestion and that the Blue Area’s long-awaited parking plaza was also being made operational.
