Director of the Seismology Center Dr. Najeeb Ahmed, has said that accurate prediction of earthquakes is not scientifically possible, and even developed countries have not been successful in this regard.
Speaking to SAMAA reporter Umar Asif, Dr. Najeeb Ahmed stated that short-term earthquake prediction is an extremely complex process. While the geological features of an area and its seismic history can help estimate potential activity, it is still not possible to determine the exact magnitude, depth, or timing of an earthquake.
He further explained that countries like Japan, the United States, and China have also been unable to accurately predict earthquakes despite advanced technology. In Pakistan, highly sensitive sensors are installed that can detect seismic activity ranging from magnitude 1.1 to 9. Additionally, 14 GPS stations across the country are continuously monitoring ground movement.
According to Dr. Najeeb Ahmed, Pakistan lies on an active fault line, making frequent seismic activity a natural occurrence. The Hindu Kush region, in particular, is situated on a dynamic fault line that is being continuously monitored to keep the public informed.
