The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) continues to play a vital role in promoting regional connectivity, cooperation, and people-to-people contact across South Asia.
Launched in 1992, the SVES allows selected categories of citizens from SAARC member countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — to travel across borders without the need for a visa. The initiative aims to strengthen ties among South Asian nations by enabling easier mobility for dignitaries and professionals.
Under the scheme, individuals falling within 24 specific categories — including parliamentarians, judges of higher courts, senior officials, journalists, business leaders, and sports personalities — are granted a special travel document known as a “Visa Sticker.” This sticker, issued by the respective home country, is valid for one year and facilitates seamless regional travel.
The SVES underscores SAARC’s commitment to fostering mutual understanding and collaboration among its member states. Member countries retain the right to periodically review and refine the scheme’s implementation to ensure its effectiveness and relevance in changing times.
