American pop singer Katy Perry has opted not to respond to public criticism following her recent space journey, with sources close to the artist revealing she considers the experience a long-cherished dream fulfilled.
The 40-year-old star was one of six women who travelled to space in April aboard a Blue Origin flight, an all-female mission led by aviation executive Lauren Sánchez.
The trip attracted both praise and scrutiny, with critics questioning the necessity and environmental cost of such ventures by celebrities.
However, according to a report published by In Touch Weekly on Saturday, Perry remains “not interested” in engaging with the backlash. An insider told the publication that the singer had been enthusiastic about space travel for years and seized the opportunity without hesitation.
“When Richard Branson went a few years ago, she started enquiring about how she could go and what it would cost,” the source said. “So it was a no-brainer when Lauren Sánchez invited her to join this mission—she jumped at the chance.”
The source added that despite concerns from her inner circle about the potential risks involved, Perry remained composed and confident throughout the process. “A lot of people in her world were quite nervous for her, because of course there are huge risks, but Katy didn’t seem the least bit afraid.”
“She was in great shape mentally and physically for it,” the insider added. “It still took a lot of training to prepare, which was a thrill in and of itself.”
Perry’s fiancé, British actor Orlando Bloom, reportedly supported her decision and helped her prepare through guided meditation techniques to maintain calm during takeoff.
The singer, known for chart-topping hits such as Firework and Roar, has long expressed a fascination with outer space. According to the source, “It really was a dream come true for Katy—she’d been wanting to go to space for as long as she can remember.”
The spaceflight, operated by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, marks one of the few all-female missions in recent years, sparking widespread media attention. While some commended the milestone in gender representation, others questioned the growing trend of celebrity space tourism, especially in the wake of global socio-economic and climate challenges.
Perry has not made any public statements about the criticism and is reportedly focused on the positive aspects of the mission.
Blue Origin has not issued any comment regarding the public reaction to the flight.
