Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked on Thursday the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advise India to act responsibly and with restraint during a telephone conversation held in the wake of escalating regional tensions.
The prime minister held an in-depth discussion with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on the evolving situation in the region, the Indian allegations, and the longstanding issue of occupied Kashmir.
PM Shehbaz rejected India's attempts to link Pakistan with the Pahalgam incident, saying, “Pakistan has informed the UN about Indian conspiracies.”
The premier conveyed grave concern over what he described as Indian state-sponsored terrorism within occupied Kashmir.
PM Shehbaz condemned India’s illegal and irresponsible water-related actions under the Indus Waters Treaty and stated that the treaty served as a lifeline for 240 million people, adding that India’s actions posed a threat to regional stability.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s firm stance, the Prime Minister declared, “Pakistan will defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity with all its might” and reiterated his resolve to respond forcefully to any Indian provocation.
He called upon the Secretary-General to advise India to act with greater responsibility and restraint.
PM Shehbaz said: “The unresolved issue of occupied Kashmir is the root cause of instability in South Asia.”
He underscored the necessity for playing a role in achieving a just solution to the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the promotion of international peace and security and remarked, “Pakistan desires peace in the region but will not remain silent in the face of any aggression.”
The UN Secretary-General appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for the advancement of peace in South Asia and said that, in the current critical situation, the world could not afford any kind of tension in the region.
Guterres urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint and engage through diplomatic efforts.
