Caretaker IT and Telecommunication Minister Dr Umar Saif on Thursday launched a pioneering initiative that aims to bridge the digital divide and drive economic growth.
Under this visionary program, cellular operators, investment companies, and banks have been directed to provide packages of smartphones in installments, making cutting-edge technology available to a wider audience.

The minister emphasised that the primary goal of the government is to provide essential facilities to the people.
By increasing smartphone availability, this initiative is poised to benefit not only the end-users but also mobile phone manufacturers, the industry, and the overall national economy.
To ensure the success of this initiative, policy directives have been issued to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), with a focus on fostering the growth of e-commerce and enhancing digital connectivity for all citizens.
The "Smartphones for All" policy is expected to be a pivotal step towards narrowing the digital divide and creating a more connected and tech-savvy population.
In a recent high-level delegation meeting with representatives from Rwanda, significant progress has been made regarding the export of "Made in Pakistan" smartphones. The Rwandan government has exhibited a keen interest in Pakistani smartphone technology, paving the way for a potential expansion of these devices into African markets.

Dr. Umar Saif also emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to defaulters who fail to make payments for smartphones purchased on installment plans.
To combat this, a comprehensive action plan is being formulated, which may include blocking the phones of defaulters who do not meet their financial commitments.
As a subsequent measure, SIM cards may be blocked, and in extreme cases, National Identity Cards could be subject to suspension.
Dr. Umar Saif asserts that these measures are essential to incentivize responsible financial behavior and ensure that smartphone accessibility continues to expand, while discouraging negligence in financial commitments.
