The internet has become an essential part of our lives as it provides us with access to information, education, and opportunities. However, not everyone has access to it.
According to the latest data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations' specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), there are still 2.6 billion people without internet access worldwide.
State of internet connectivity
The global number of internet users has increased to 5.4 billion, up from 4.9 billion in 2021. However, 33% of the global population still lacks internet access.
The strongest growth in internet connectivity has been observed in low-income countries, where internet users increased by approximately 17% over the past year.
However, in these countries, less than a third of individuals have internet access.
Challenges
There are a number of challenges to achieving universal internet connectivity, including:
- Lack of infrastructure: In many parts of the world, there is simply not enough infrastructure to support internet access.
- Affordability: The cost of internet access can be prohibitive for many people, especially in low-income countries.
- Digital skills: Even if people have access to the internet, they may not have the skills to use it effectively.
Benefits
Internet access has a number of benefits, including:
- Access to information: The internet provides access to a wealth of information, including news, education, and entertainment.
- Economic opportunities: The internet can help people find jobs, start businesses, and learn new skills.
- Social connection: The internet can help people stay connected with friends and family, regardless of distance.
- Health and education: The internet can be used to improve health care and education services.
