In a swift response, Iran has firmly denied any involvement in the recent drone attack near the Jordan-Syria border that resulted in the tragic loss of three American military personnel's lives and left numerous others injured.
Spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanaani, categorically rejected the allegations, emphasizing that the resistance groups operating in the region, while sharing common sentiments with Iran, do not operate under Tehran's direct commands.
Kanaani asserted, "These groups decide and act based on their own principles and priorities as well as the interests of their country and people."
Iran blames Zionist regime
In a further rebuke of the accusations, Kanaani suggested that the claims of Iranian involvement were politically motivated and influenced by third parties, including what he referred to as the "child-killing Zionist regime."
He stated that such assertions were aimed at distorting the realities of the region and pursuing specific political goals.
Contrary to the accusations, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed armed groups, has claimed responsibility for the drone strike on Tower 22, a logistics support base. However, Iran's mission to the United Nations reiterated Tehran's stance, stating in a released statement that Iran had "no connection and had nothing to do" with the attack, attributing it to the ongoing conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region.
Biden condemns attack, vows accountability
US President Joe Biden, who has consistently supported Israel's actions in Gaza, condemned the drone attack as "despicable and wholly unjust." He vowed to hold all those responsible "to account at a time and in a manner [of] our choosing," marking the first instance of American lives lost by enemy fire since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
The drone attack on Tower 22 has escalated tensions between the United States and Iran, with Washington accusing Iranian-backed groups of carrying out numerous attacks on US military installations in Iraq and Syria since the commencement of the war. The incident adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two nations.
