Politicians reacted to the news of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s win over Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s (PMAP) Mahmood Khan Achakzai to hold the office of president.
Following Asif Ali Zardari’s successful election as President of Pakistan, congratulatory messages poured in from various quarters, particularly from Lahore, echoing sentiments of triumph for democracy and federalism.
As per the final vote tally, Zardari, a former president and candidate fielded by the ruling alliance, won 255 votes, while Achakzai polled 119 votes.
In total, Asif Zardari bagged 411 electoral votes in parliament and the four assemblies, while Achakzai got 181 votes.
Lawmakers across the country in the Senate, National as well as the four provincial assemblies cast their votes to elect the president. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had finalized all arrangements for the process, which commenced at 10am and concluded at 4pm.
Nawaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo, Nawaz Sharif, telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari to extend heartfelt congratulations on his re-election as President for the second term. Sources revealed that Nawaz Sharif conveyed his best wishes and expressed solidarity with Zardari's presidency.
In response, President Zardari graciously acknowledged Nawaz Sharif's congratulatory message, thanking him for his support and goodwill. The leaders reportedly engaged in discussions regarding collaborative efforts to address the challenges confronting the country, particularly focusing on matters concerning national development and stability.
Sources further disclosed that both leaders have agreed to convene a meeting in the near future to deliberate on pertinent issues and explore avenues for cooperation.
Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm congratulations to Zardari on his triumph, emphasizing the unity and confidence expressed by members of the National Assembly, Senate, and representatives from all four provinces.

Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam on Saturday congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on his election to the office of the President.
“I would like to express my sincere congratulations on the election of H.E. Asif Ali Zardari, as the 14th President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” the Ambassador said in a statement.
According to Ambassador, Asif Ali Zardari reminded them the “glorious and golden days” of the relations between the two brotherly, friendly and neighboring countries of Iran and Pakistan.
The Envoy wished for a boost in the all-out relations and ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan during his tenure.
