A tragic incident unfolded near Virginia's western border on Sunday when a small plane crashed into a wooded area, claiming the lives of all five individuals on board, including a juvenile.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the twin-engine IAI Astra 1125 crashed close to Ingalls Field Airport in Hot Springs, Virginia, around 3pm.
According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller, the victims included four adults and one juvenile, all of whom died instantly. The pilot was also among the deceased. Geller's statement was obtained by CNN affiliate WSLS.
Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have announced plans to investigate the tragic incident. Authorities have characterized the aircraft as a small private jet.
Geller emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with state police collaborating with the FAA and NTSB to confirm the flight path of the plane and identify its occupants.
Hot Springs, where the crash occurred, is situated near the border between Virginia and West Virginia, approximately 160 miles northwest of Richmond.
