A recent report by the Varieties of Democracy Institute, based in Sweden, has unveiled concerning findings regarding India's democratic status. Despite its self-proclaimed secular ID entity, India's rank has plummeted to 104th out of 179 countries in the Liberal Democracy Index.
Critics highlight the challenges faced by minorities, particularly Muslims, since the Modi govt came in 2014. Allegations suggest that the promotion of Hindutva ideology has led to discriminatory practices, depriving minorities of both essential rights and facilities.
The report underscores a concerning trend of limited freedom of expression and compromised electoral transparency within the nation. The Modi administration stands accused of leveraging sedition, defamation, and anti-terrorism laws to suppress those who protest against its Hindutva agenda.
Moreover, amendments to legislation, such as the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in 2019, have been criticized for undermining India's constitutional commitment to secularism.
Media freedom has also been a casualty, with journalists critical of the govt facing intimidation tactics ranging from tax evasion charges to accusations of terrorism.
The report's revelations shed light on India's diminishing reputation as a democratic stronghold, raising questions about the United Nations' potential response to what some describe as a "fascist agenda" under the Modi administration.
