The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives has, in a bid to address concerns surrounding Pakistan's recent elections, passed a resolution aimed at promoting democracy, transparency, and human rights in the country.
The resolution, which received unanimous support with 50 votes in favor and none against, will now proceed to the House of Representatives for further consideration and approval.
The resolution, presented on September 30, 2023, but voted upon just yesterday, highlights several key demands regarding Pakistan's electoral process. It calls for the assurance of transparent elections, the upholding of human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
Additionally, the resolution emphasizes the need for an investigation into allegations of interference and irregularities during the February 8 elections.

Furthermore, the resolution urges both US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to engage in increased dialogue and cooperation with Pakistani authorities to address these concerns and support democratic principles in the region. It also called for transparent elections in Pakistan, which are in accordance with the aspirations of the people.
The committee's decision comes following a recent hearing held on March 20, focused on democracy in Pakistan post-elections. During the hearing, American Ambassador Donald Lu participated, providing insights and perspectives on the situation.
He also categorically denied allegations suggesting that the United States played any role in the removal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from the office of prime minister. Asserting respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty, he emphasized that the allegations of US involvement in Imran Khan's removal were baseless.
