Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar has voiced a strong condemnation against the implementation of Article 144 on the final day of campaigns for upcoming by-elections.
Terming it as a symbol of civil dictatorship in Punjab, Bhachar expressed deep concern over what he perceives as an infringement on constitutional, legal, and political rights.
In a statement issued from Lahore, Bhachar accused Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of being complicit in the revocation of these fundamental rights. "The election commission is sleeping. What kind of election is this where Section 144 has been imposed?" he questioned.
He emphasized that the Punjab government was constantly violating the Constitution, and urged the higher judiciary to take notice of the matter.
Furthermore, the opposition leader criticized the Election Commission of Pakistan, describing it as "stupid" and alleging that it has failed to uphold its responsibilities effectively. He lamented the situation in Punjab, asserting that the province has been transformed into a "prison of civil dictatorship".
Bhachar went on to allege that on Thursday night, the police conducted "horrific" raids on the houses of former and current candidates and detained numerous current and former assembly members. Additionally, he claimed that police forces vandalized the offices of election candidates, further exacerbating the tense situation.
