The Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has announced the lifting of its temporary suspension on accepting TOEFL scores for visa applications. This decision allows applicants to once again use the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT test results to demonstrate their English language proficiency.
Last July, the DHA temporarily halted the acceptance of TOEFL scores to conduct a thorough review. After careful consideration, TOEFL scores are now recognized as valid documentation for visa applications, effective immediately.
The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to assess the English language skills of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities and institutions worldwide, including those in Australia.
Australian immigration requires applicants to demonstrate a certain level of English proficiency to ensure effective communication and integration into Australian life. Submitting a TOEFL score is one way to meet this requirement and strengthen a visa application.
The DHA reinstated the acceptance of TOEFL scores for visa applications on May 5, 2024. Only TOEFL iBT scores obtained on or after this date will be considered valid.
Australia also recognizes scores from other established English proficiency exams, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE), Cambridge English (CAE), and Occupational English Test (OET) for healthcare professionals.
The resumption of TOEFL acceptance streamlines visa procedures, making it easier for international students, professionals, and migrants to pursue opportunities in Australia. By embracing various recognized English proficiency tests, Australia reaffirms its commitment to diversity and inclusion, inviting individuals from around the world to contribute to its education system and cultural richness.
