Rahul Gandhi - the central leader of the Indian opposition party Congress and the opposition alliance 'India' - has proclaimed that the people have given a unanimous decision against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This statement comes as the results of the general elections are set to be announced today, with the Congress-led opposition alliance expected to secure a substantial number of seats.
In a press conference held alongside other Congress leaders before the official announcement of the election results, Gandhi stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fought the election against the entire state machinery. "Not only did the BJP battle against us, but also against secret agencies, bureaucracy, and the judiciary," he remarked.
Gandhi accused the BJP of employing various tactics, including breaking parties and imprisoning chief ministers, in their bid to retain power. Despite these efforts, he asserted, "India has given a unanimous decision that it does not want Modi."
Highlighting the unity within Congress, Gandhi credited the poor, laborers, and farmers for their role in the electoral battle against the government. He emphasized that the India alliance has played a crucial role in preserving the Indian constitution through this election.
"The election results send a clear message to Modi from the people: they no longer want him," Gandhi declared. He added that decisions regarding which seats he will retain and which he will relinquish will be made after consultations with allies. "We will decide on alliances with any party after meeting with our colleagues," he noted.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking on the occasion, hailed the party's success in the Lok Sabha elections. He condemned the BJP's tactics and celebrated the electoral outcome as a significant victory for the people and a defeat for the ruling party. "These elections were Modi versus the people, and these results represent a colossal defeat for the ruling party and a triumph for the populace," Kharge stated.
