The federal government has set ambitious targets for distribution companies (DISCOs) across Pakistan to enhance electricity demand and reduce line losses in the upcoming financial year.
According to official documents, DISCOs have been tasked with significantly increasing electricity connections nationwide. The government aims to facilitate more than 1.775 million new electricity connections within the year.
As per documents, this initiative includes plans to provide electricity to 6,937 new villages across various regions in the next financial year.
Specifically, the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) have been allocated targets to provide over 450,000 and 330,000 new connections, respectively. Similarly, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) have set targets of more than 283,000 and 268,000 new connections, respectively.
Moreover, MEPCO and PESCO have been assigned to target of providing electricity to 2,440 and 1,500 new villages under their managements, the document stated. Additionally, 1,000 new villages under QESCO and FESCO each will also receive electricity.
In addition to expanding access, DISCOs have also been mandated to curb line losses. The targets set include measures to improve efficiency in distribution networks, thereby enhancing overall service delivery and minimizing wastage.
