The US has stated that while it is in favor of direct talks between India and Pakistan, the two neighbors should decide on the talks' timing, parameters, and overall framework.
In response to a question during his daily press briefing on Thursday, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the State Department, stated that the United States cherishes its significant partnerships with Pakistan and India.
"As we have said, we support direct discussions between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope and character should be determined by those two countries, not by us," he stated.
In response to a different question, Miller stated that Pakistan and the US both have a shared interest in countering threats to regional security.
He said, "We partner with Pakistan on security through our high-level counterterrorism dialogue, including several counterterrorism capacity-building programmes, and we support a series of US-Pakistan military-to-military engagements."
He further added, "We are in regular communication with Pakistani leaders as a part of our partnership on CT issues, and we will continue to discuss regional security in detail, including through our annual counterterrorism dialogue and other bilateral consultations."
