Chicken meat prices in Lahore and other parts of Punjab have witnessed a significant surge after a brief period of decline.
The latest figures revealed that chicken meat prices in the provincial capital have increased by Rs18, reaching Rs595 per kilogramme on July 20, up from the previous day's rate of Rs577 per kg.
The recent downward trend in chicken prices was largely attributed to a decline in consumption during Eidul Adha, as many households opted for sacrificial animals like goats, cows, and camels. However, the post-Eid period has seen prices rebound sharply.
Official rates released by the local authorities confirm the new price of Rs595 per kg for chicken meat. In addition to the rise in chicken prices, the cost of eggs has also been adjusted, now fixed at Rs258 per dozen in Lahore and its surrounding areas.
Residents have expressed frustration over the escalating prices, especially in the context of increased utility bills and the rising cost of other essential commodities. Many have called on the government to intervene and take action against the alleged price manipulation by market mafias.
The price hikes are not limited to poultry alone. Cooking oil, ghee, and lentils have also become more expensive, following a recent increase in petrol prices across the country.
