The United Nations has expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule since 2021. UN experts recently warned the international community against normalizing relations with the Taliban.
The UN highlighted ongoing violations of women's rights in Afghanistan. Taliban leadership has dismissed international concerns about women's rights as an "internal matter."
According to the UN, the Afghan government is involved in suppressing dissent, attacking media houses, and violating women's rights. Reports of arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and increasing incidents of torture have been cited as evidence of human rights violations.
The UN also accused the Taliban interim government of misusing foreign aid intended for the Afghan people, alleging its use in terrorism, smuggling, and other crimes.
International organizations have strongly criticized the three-year Taliban rule imposed on the Afghan people. The UN has called for a renewed global commitment to support the Afghan population suffering under Taliban governance.
It remains to be seen whether the Taliban interim government will lift restrictions imposed on the Afghan people in response to UN pressure, or continue to resist international calls for change.
