The federal government has decided to amend the Indus River System Authority Act, of 1992.
The Sindh government has decided to reject the possible change. Sources said any change in the Irsa Act will be opposed and an adjournment motion regarding the Irsa Act will be tabled in the Sindh Assembly.
It has been decided that all PPP members will oppose any kind of amendment to the Irsa Act.
Sources claimed the federation wants to repeal the Irsa Water Act 1991 (Water accord) and retain powers.
A water accord titled ‘appointment of water of the Indus River system between the provinces’ was signed by the provinces on March 16, 1991, and approved by the Council of Common Interests on March 21, 1991.
The IRSA has its headquarters in Lahore.
As per the Irsa Act 1992, the authority shall, after the close of each cropping season of Kharif and Rabi, furnish a water account report to the federal government with copies thereof to the provincial governments and Wapda indicating a summary of the quantities of inflows and supplies utilized by the provinces about their authorized shares.
