An Australian couple has rediscovered their long-lost wedding video after an astonishing 57 years in a heartwarming twist of fate,
Aileen Turnbull and her husband Bill, who wed in Scotland in 1967, thought they had forever misplaced the footage from their special day—until a chance encounter on Facebook brought it back into their lives.
The couple, now in their seventies, originally borrowed a projector to watch the video shortly after their wedding. However, they accidentally left the film in the projector and never saw it again. That is, until Aileen was scrolling through her social media feed and stumbled upon a still from the lost footage.
"I was looking through Facebook when I saw a wedding photograph. My husband was sitting here, and I turned to him and said, ‘There’s our wedding photograph!’” Aileen recounted to BBC Scotland.
The photo was posted by Terry Cheyne of Scotland, whose uncle had lent the projector to the Turnbulls over five decades ago. While sorting through his uncle’s belongings, Cheyne found the footage among his old film reels. Curious, he transferred the films to DVD, only to discover an unknown wedding film featuring the couple.
"The first film that was on the DVD was a mysterious unknown film to me. It was clearly a wedding in Mastrick Church. I watched it many times, but I didn’t know anybody," Cheyne shared.
When Aileen and Bill finally watched the footage, it was a surreal experience. Aileen expressed her amazement, saying, “It just seems strange for me to see my mother and my father, not just in a photograph but they’re actually moving and walking. My husband saw his grandmother and grandfather, who was 100 when he died. To look back and see these people was just absolutely amazing. I still can’t believe it really.”
This unexpected reunion with their wedding memories has not only rekindled cherished moments but also served as a beautiful reminder of the passage of time and the connections that endure through the years.
