United States (US) Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris articulated her vision for a more equitable future, focusing on marijuana decriminalization, police reforms, and countering misinformation in the political arena.
In a candid interview with radio host Charlamagne Tha God, addressing her record as a former district attorney, Harris firmly rejected accusations that she disproportionately incarcerated Black men, stating, “It's just simply not true,” and emphasising her progressive stance on marijuana-related cases. She committed to decriminalizing marijuana if elected president, recognizing the detrimental effects of current laws on marginalized populations.
“As president, I would work to decriminalize marijuana because I knew how the laws have hurt certain populations, especially Black men,” she stated.
With the election just weeks away, Harris is determined to secure support, particularly from the Black community.
Harris also highlighted the importance of reforming law enforcement, expressing her support for the stalled George Floyd Policing Act. “I would work to pass the George Floyd Policing Act,” she affirmed, calling for urgent changes in policing practices to combat systemic issues.
On the topic of misinformation tactics from the Trump campaign, particularly aimed at Black voters, Harris commented, “They are trying to scare people away because they know they otherwise have nothing to run on.” She underscored her commitment to addressing these challenges while focusing on her economic proposals designed to support Black men and small-business owners.
When asked about the January 6 Capitol attack and the role of Attorney General Merrick Garland, Harris stressed the importance of allowing the courts to take action, stating, “I'm going to handle November,” as she shifted her focus to the impending election.
Criticizing Trump's character, she declared, “This man is weak and he is unfit,” raising concerns about his leadership.
With both Harris and Trump engaging in a fierce battle for voter support, the stakes are high as the election approaches, making every statement and policy proposal crucial in this pivotal moment in US history.
