A tragic helicopter crash in a residential area of Houston claimed the lives of four people, including a child, on Sunday night.
The helicopter, identified as a Robinson R44, struck a radio tower at approximately 8 p.m. CT, officials confirmed.
The helicopter was flying from Ellington Airport when it crashed under unknown circumstances. A fire erupted at the crash site, according to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator Brian Rutt. The NTSB, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local authorities, is conducting a meticulous investigation into the crash.
"It's a complex scene, and we are carefully collecting evidence," Rutt told reporters, noting that the helicopter lacked a black box flight data recorder.
Initial information from the NTSB suggests that the helicopter was on an air tour flight when it hit the tower. The crash site spans at least four acres, Houston Police Department Lt. Jonathan French said. Power outages were reported in the vicinity, but no ground injuries or vehicle damage occurred.
Residents are being advised to report any debris from the crash to authorities. "Any debris is considered evidence. Please avoid handling it," Lt. French emphasized.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
