In a remarkable development for Pakistan's energy sector, Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has unveiled a substantial gas discovery in the Ghotki-Sindh region.
The newly explored reserves are set to have a significant impact on the country's gas production, with initial estimates indicating a daily yield of 1.11 million cubic feet of gas per day (MCFD).
MPCL, the operator of Mari Development & Production Lease (D&PL) area with a 100% working interest, revealed this groundbreaking news in a correspondence to the Pakistan Stock Exchange dated October 9, 2023.
The discovery was made possible through the successful drilling and testing of the appraisal well, named Mari Ghazij-2.
The journey to this discovery began on September 11, 2023, when the well was spud-in. It was drilled to an impressive depth of 1,016 meters, showcasing the company's commitment to exploration and production in the region.
The post-acid gas flow rate was recorded at 11.1 Million Standard Cubic Feet Per Day, with a Wellhead Flowing Pressure of 519 Pounds Per Square Inch at a 64/64-inch choke size.
The Ghazij-2 well is just the first step in a series of planned appraisal wells aimed at evaluating the Ghazij-1 discovery and determining its extent.
Once the regulatory formalities are completed, the well will be put on extended well testing for the supply of gas to the government's designated buyer.
This significant discovery comes as a follow-up to MPCL's earlier achievement, when they informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange on January 25, 2023, about the gas discovery at their exploratory well, Mari Ghazij-1, located in the Mari D&PL area.
