Pakistan's mobile phone manufacturing industry has grown significantly in recent years as local manufacturing plants produced 10.87 million handsets in the first eight months of 2023.
This compares to 0.84 million units imported commercially, according to the data issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The locally manufactured/assembled 10.87 million mobile handsets included 7.62 million 2G and 3.04 million smartphones.
This suggests that the majority of mobile phones produced in Pakistan are still 2G feature phones.
However, the production of smartphones is increasing rapidly, and it is expected to surpass 2G feature phone production in the near future.
Despite the growth of Pakistan's mobile phone manufacturing industry, the country still imports a significant number of mobile phones.
In the first two months of the current fiscal year, mobile phone imports in Pakistan have surged 76%.
This is due to a number of factors including the increased demand for smartphones, the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee, and smuggling.
Pakistan's mobile phone imports have increased by a shocking 76% in the first two months of the current fiscal year, according to the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
PBS data shows that mobile phone imports in August 2023 reached a significant $111.34 million, representing a 77% increase from the same month in 2022.
Similarly, mobile phone imports in July 2023 amounted to $68.13 million, a 76% increase from July of the previous year.
