The federal government has removed the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir, from his post, citing his failure to curb human trafficking and implement necessary accountability and reforms within the agency.
Following approval from the government, the Establishment Division issued a formal notification, designating Jahangir as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Reasons behind removal
According to official sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was personally unhappy with Jahangir’s professional performance, particularly his inability to enforce strict measures against human trafficking networks. Despite the PM's direct instructions, Jahangir failed to establish a strong system of accountability and reform within the FIA.
Sources also revealed that under Jahangir’s leadership, there was a rise in cases involving FIA officials themselves being linked to human trafficking. His lack of strong and complete control over the agency contributed to the decision to remove him from office.
During his tenure, Pakistan faced global scrutiny over human trafficking incidents and major international tragedies involving Pakistani migrants. Despite the growing crisis, Jahangir was unable to dismantle the organized networks facilitating illegal migration.
Jahangir’s tenure as FIA DG
Ahmed Ishaq Jahangir, a Grade-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, was appointed the FIA DG on January 30, 2024, and remained in office for almost a year. However, due to continued inefficiencies in FIA operations, he has now been removed from his position.
