Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while addressing the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday, expressed deep gratitude towards overseas Pakistanis for their invaluable contributions to the nation’s growth and global reputation.
“I am grateful to the overseas Pakistanis present at this ceremony,” the PM said, adding that their efforts are bringing pride to Pakistan on the international stage. He acknowledged that remittances from overseas Pakistanis have surged by 30%, significantly benefiting the national treasury and stabilizing the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Highlighting the government's commitment, Shehbaz Sharif stated, “The government and the nation salute the overseas Pakistanis.” He emphasized the importance of their investments, noting that these have a huge positive impact on the national economy. "When overseas Pakistanis purchase properties, their prices skyrocket," he remarked.
The PM assured that the government has taken substantial steps to resolve the long-standing issues faced by the overseas community, especially in property disputes.
“The overseas department in Punjab, under the leadership of the chief minister, is actively addressing these issues,” he said. Shehbaz Sharif also pledged to leave no stone unturned in resolving their concerns, stating, “I will rest only after ensuring overseas Pakistanis get their rights.”
In a major announcement, Prime Minister Sharif revealed that blue passports would be issued to overseas Pakistanis, offering them enhanced recognition and privileges.
Referring to the Green Channel initiative, originally introduced by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to facilitate easier processing for overseas Pakistanis, Shehbaz Sharif promised its immediate restoration. “We will not allow the Green Channel to turn into yellow or red,” he assured.
On the topic of national security, Shehbaz Sharif addressed the resurgence of terrorism, criticizing previous governments for their leniency. “By 2018, terrorism was eliminated from Pakistan, thanks to the sacrifices of 80,000 Pakistanis, including civilians, officers, and soldiers,” he stated. The PM condemned a previous government’s decision to allow terrorists back into the country, calling it an act of hostility towards the nation.
However, he reaffirmed his government's resolve to combat terrorism. “Terrorism will be buried again, and this land will be made safe. These sacrifices will not go in vain,” he vowed.
During his speech, Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the importance of youth engagement. He supported the proposal for a Youth Festival and announced plans to collaborate with the information minister to organize the event.
With over 10 million Pakistanis living abroad, the Prime Minister's remarks underscored the vital role of the diaspora in shaping the country’s future.
