Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s proactive approach towards climate change and environmental sustainability while addressing the International Conference on Climate Change in Lahore.
She emphasized that Punjab is making historic efforts to combat air pollution, water scarcity, and environmental degradation.
Marriyum Aurangzeb praised CM Maryam Nawaz, stating that she has emerged as a regional leader for environmental improvement.
“She is initiating dialogue with India with an open heart to tackle air pollution, which affects both nations,” she said.
A budget of Rs10 billion has been allocated for anti-smog initiatives, while Rs100 billion has been set aside for climate resilience projects, marking a significant commitment to environmental protection.
Key initiatives for climate change
Air Quality Monitoring and Control
- 30 new AQI monitors have been installed, providing satellite-linked air quality data.
- 60 more monitors will be deployed by March, bringing the total to 100 across Punjab.
- Brick kilns have been shifted to zigzag technology with real-time monitoring for emissions control.
- Mapping of industries has been conducted, ensuring the installation of environmental control systems.
Agriculture and Renewable Energy Initiatives
- To discourage stubble burning, the government has subsidized crop spreaders by 60% for farmers.
- The pilot project of a biogas plant has been successfully completed.
Plastic Ban and Sustainable Transport
- A ban on plastic bags is being strictly enforced across Punjab.
- 27 electric buses have been launched in Lahore under the e-Mass Transit Program.
- Work is underway on the retrofitting of two- and three-wheelers to reduce emissions.
Addressing Water Scarcity and Industrial Pollution
Marriyum Aurangzeb acknowledged that South Punjab faces the highest water shortage, and efforts are being made to improve water conservation. Additionally, financial assistance has been provided to over 50 industrial units to install emission control systems.
