Google Messages is working on an exciting integration with WhatsApp, as revealed through an APK teardown of its latest app version.
The upcoming feature will enable users to make WhatsApp video calls directly from the Google Messages interface.
If both the sender and recipient of a message have WhatsApp installed, a new video call icon will appear in the top-right menu. Tapping on this icon will initiate a WhatsApp video call immediately.
Currently, this integration is limited to one-on-one chats. For group chats, or when the person you're chatting with does not have WhatsApp, the video call option in Google Messages will default to Google Meet.
The exact behaviour of this feature may evolve before its official release.
It is hoped that users will have the choice between using WhatsApp or Google Meet for video calls, allowing more flexibility depending on personal preference or the app availability of their contacts.
Although the launch date remains unclear, the feature is in active development and is expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
