Stand-up comedy often pushes boundaries, but Samay Raina’s YouTube show India’s Got Latent may have pushed too far this time.
The latest episode, featuring YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia aka BeerBiceps, Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija (Rebel Kid), and comedian Jaspreet Singh, sparked outrage over objectification, misogyny, and explicit language.
While Ranveer Allahbadia bore the brunt of the backlash, Apoorva Mukhija has also found herself at the centre of criticism.
Who is Apoorva Mukhija?
Apoorva, a computer science engineer turned content creator, built a massive following with relatable content, eventually amassing over 2.7 million Instagram followers. Her rise to fame saw her land collaborations with top brands like Maybelline, Nike, and Swiggy, and even earn a spot on Forbes India’s Top 100 Digital Stars list for two consecutive years. But with fame comes scrutiny, and Apoorva is no stranger to online hate.
In the past, she has faced relentless trolling, and hate messages in her DMs. One viral incident involved her standing up to hecklers at Delhi Technological University, where security had to intervene. Despite facing negativity, she has remained vocal about her journey, saying, “I had so much fun at my lowest too.”
Why the outrage?
Apoorva Mukhija was present as a guest panellist with Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and host Samay Raina. Amid the episode, Mukhija made a vulgar remark involving a contestant’s mother, which triggered intense backlash from viewers. Despite the show's reputation for bold and unfiltered humour, many believe that this particular episode went too far.
Although Allahbadia’s comments have been at the centre of the controversy, Mukhija’s remarks have also sparked debate. Following the outrage, she attempted to downplay the situation by sharing a screenshot of a private chat with a friend, captioning it, “Me and [friend]’s last two brain cells trying to come up with a solve for the new problem that I created.”
