Meta Platforms has announced the formation of a new division within its Reality Labs unit, aimed at developing AI-powered humanoid robots to assist with physical tasks.
The move reflected the company's growing focus on robotics and artificial intelligence.
In an internal company memo, Meta's Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth revealed that the new robotics product group would concentrate on research and development of "consumer humanoid robots," with the objective of "maximising Llama's platform capabilities."
Llama refers to Meta's primary series of AI foundation models, which support an expanding range of generative AI products across the company's social media platforms.
The robotics division will be headed by Marc Whitten, who was previously the CEO of the self-driving car company Cruise.
Whitten has been appointed as Meta's Vice President of Robotics, Bosworth confirmed in the memo.
