The water crisis in Rawalpindi has intensified due to a lack of rainfall, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to declare a drought emergency in the city.
According to WASA Rawalpindi Managing Director (MD) Salim Ashraf, the water level at Rawal Dam has dropped to 1,743 feet, leaving only 45 days' worth of water supply. Additionally, due to cleaning operations at Khanpur Dam, water supply will remain suspended until February 22.
Critical Water Shortage
• Rawalpindi’s daily water demand is 68 million gallons, but the available supply is only 51 million gallons.
• The city's water needs are being met through Rawal Dam, Khanpur Dam, and tube wells, but underground water levels have also dropped by 700 feet, worsening the situation.
• If there is no rainfall in February and March, the crisis could become severe, warns WASA MD.
The authorities are urging citizens to conserve water and adopt measures to tackle the looming shortage as they await much-needed rainfall.
