WhatsApp is introducing a redesigned emoji reaction panel across its messaging platform, with the update already available to Android beta testers.
The improved interface, spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.6.15 on the Google Play Store, transforms how emoji reactions appear throughout the app with a more structured and efficient layout.
The most significant change comes to the reaction display system, which now arranges emojis in a grid format with four reactions per row. This redesign specifically addresses the space constraints in the previous vertical list format, which became unwieldy, particularly in channels where reactions tend to be more numerous.
"The new grid layout substantially reduces vertical scrolling and makes finding specific reactions more intuitive," notes WABetaInfo, which first reported the update.
For personal chats and groups, WhatsApp maintains the vertical list format that displays contact names alongside their reactions, preserving the context-appropriate approach to showing who responded to messages. However, even this implementation receives a facelift with redesigned tabs at the top of the reaction sheet, giving the interface a contemporary appearance.
The context-sensitive design reflects the different uses of reactions across the platform. In channels, where follower identities remain private unless they're in a user's contact list, the new grid layout prioritizes space efficiency. Meanwhile, in personal communications, the vertical list maintains its utility while benefiting from visual enhancements.
Meta-owned WhatsApp plans to extend this updated emoji reaction experience to more users in the coming weeks, continuing its pattern of gradual feature rollouts following beta testing periods.
